Labradors are an amazing breed that loves their owner and food unconditionally. As one of the most food motivated breeds, it is not often that a lab will refuse any food.This can make it very difficult to control your best friend’s waist line. Most foods will recommend far more than your dog needs – often feeding about 30% less than the packet recommendation or using a low-calorie complete diet is advisable. You should easily be able to feel your labs ribs, and see 1-2 of them when they are wet. If you pooch is struggling with his or her waist line, talk to you veterinarian to devise a customised weight management plan.

If you are purchasing a lab from a breeder is valuable to see the scoring results of their parents to minimise the risk of degenerative disease in your pet. If your lab is unlucky enough to be prone to joint disease, starting on anti-arthritis supplements, such as chondroitin and glucosamine,before joint disease begins has been shown to help reduce arthritis formation in the future. There are prescription diets available that already in these supplements which can save you money.

Labradors are also prone to allergies. Feeding a diet high and balanced in omega 3, 6 & 9 fatty acids is a great way to ensure that their natural barrier to allergens is maintained and their coat is kept beautiful and shiny.
